Opinion || QIAO Hong: When general AI meets humanoid robots

Why is General AI (Artificial Intelligence) powerful?

On May 28, at the 2023 ZGC (Zhongguancun) Forum - Forum on Women in Sci-Tech Innovation, Ms. QIAO Hong, President of WRCO and member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, briefly answered the question, "If robotic systems and general AI systems are are combined and can accomplish many tasks in physical space, it will have an even more mind-blowing impact on society."

In 2021, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the launch of a humanoid robot, whose best feature is that it is about the same height and weight as a human being, sells for $20,000, which is equivalent to a worker's salary for a year, and the key point is that it is general.

"The General here means that the humanoid robot can not only move things and assemble parts in factories, but also do farm work in the countryside and do housework at home." QIAO said, "Such a general AI system can be both cheap and easy to use, but there is still a long way to go before it comes out."

Over the years, QIAO has long been engaged in robotics "hand-eye-brain" research work, leading the research team to carry out humanoid robot technology research. She has repeatedly said, "An important trend in the future development of robots is that they are getting closer and closer to living creatures, and are no longer cold machines, but have a series of human-like features, including cognition, emotion, logic, and movement."

QIAO found in the research, the current use of robots for high-precision assembly is a greater difficulty, but also the team's main direction of attack. In the future, the human-inspired development of robots and humanoid robotic systems are expected to become a good helper for human work and life.

"To realize this beautiful vision, robots need to learn from people, who do things with a complete circuit of hands, eyes, and brain." QIAO realized that a human looking at something actually answers two things; what is it? Where is it? This is what the robot needs to learn further.

QIAO firmly believes that "robots do not completely replace people, but just free people from some tedious work and have more time to do what they like to do."

Likewise, making robots better benefit humankind has always been the vision of WRCO.
